Over het kunstwerk
The light artwork THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR was designed by Sandra E. Blatterer (b. 1978, Vienna). During the renovation of the old fire station and its transformation into the new Deelfabriek, an art integration was planned, and Sandra Blatterer’s light sculpture was selected.
Deelfabriek
At Deelfabriek, circular economy finds a place in the city. The facility represents a new way of living and thinking, in line with the growing trend of sharing and reuse. Various citizen initiatives focus on exchanging, borrowing, and recycling. It is an open space welcoming everyone, fostering an empowering and autonomous environment where different initiatives can meet and reinforce each other. This shared vision of “sharing” connects people who wish to save, consume less, live more sustainably, or become more self-reliant.
Old Fire Station
This site was the former fire station of Kortrijk. The modernist building was erected in 1940 by architects W. Dutoit, P.A. Pauwels, and W. Vanspranghe. Its 24-meter tower with a glass “eagle’s nest,” formerly used for drying fire hoses, is visible from afar and forms a local landmark. For this reason, Sandra Blatterer’s artwork was installed in the tower.
THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE AIR
The light sculpture serves as a beacon in the city and a recognizable landmark during dark hours. The concept originated from the idea of “writing with light.”
Sandra Blatterer experiments with three-dimensional light drawings in space and explores how these drawings relate to the viewer, the environment, and surrounding materials. This artwork plays with space, the public and private, the conceptual, while also referencing purposeful signage in our world and the materialistic world of products. The light sculpture connects people, unites the city, and, through its materiality, reflects the mission and vision of Deelfabriek, making it a kind of social sculpture.
“To pluck something out of the air means to draw from the void. ‘Something is in the air’ points out to an expectant future soon materializing. Both ideas together seem to sketch the outlines of a yet unshaped space wherein any further thought and dream can breathe, from whomever it may originate.” – Thomas Schütt
Sandra E. Blatterer was born in Vienna, Austria, and lives and works in Berlin, Germany. In her practice, she explores different methods of artistic light creation and the effect of various qualities of light in spaces. She creates installations and performances using design sketches, media studies, video mapping, music, photography, and architecture.
