Het thema van de derde Triënnale is ‘After Paradise’ : ‘Wat na het ‘paradijs’? In contrast met de harmonie en de rijke overvloed die er in het paradijs terug te vinden is, confronteert het na-paradijs ons met grondstoftekorten, sociale spanningen en een sterk vervuild milieu. Hoewel dit overwegend negatief klinkt, wil After Paradise eerder een positief verhaal vertellen. Verantwoordelijkheid nemen en empowerment staan hierbij centraal. Dit wordt weerspiegeld in de artistieke invulling, met een focus op werken die uitdagen tot dialoog, tot reflectie en tot actie.
Wanneer we beseffen dat het paradijs onherroepelijk verloren is gegaan, hoeft dat niet noodzakelijk te resulteren in negatieve gevoelens als melancholie, verdriet of defaitisme. Je zou net zo goed kunnen zeggen dat we enkel dankzij dat besef van een ‘verloren paradijs’ kunnen begrijpen welke vragen en uitdagingen er vandaag werkelijk toe doen. In het paradijs werden materiële overvloed, sociale harmonie en natuurlijke zuiverheid als een evidentie beschouwd: er werd niet bij stilgestaan en men besefte niet dat ook dat zou kunnen verdwijnen. Enkel na het paradijs kan er sprake zijn van verantwoordelijkheid en ‘empowerment’. Verantwoordelijkheid als in het besef dat we die waarden moeten koesteren, dat ze niet evident zijn, en dat de mens er verantwoordelijk voor is. Empowerment is dan weer het besef dat we zelf actie moet ondernemen om een leefbare wereld te scheppen.
Een perfecte wereld is voor de mens namelijk niet binnen bereik, maar de mens kan wel werken aan een betere wereld. We moeten samen nadenken over wat we uit het verleden willen meenemen naar de toekomst, en wat niet. En we beseffen dat het aan ons is om de toekomst vorm te geven.
Het concept voor ‘After Paradise’ kwam tot stand door een samenwerking tussen de curatoren (Hilde Teerlinck en Patrick Ronse) en Stéphane Symons (KU Leuven, Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte).

About the exhibition (EN)
The theme of the third Triennial is ‘After Paradise’: ‘What after ‘paradise’? In contrast to the harmony and rich abundance that can be found in paradise, the after-paradise confronts us with raw material shortages, social tensions and a highly polluted environment. Although this sounds mainly negative, After Paradise wants to tell a positive story. Taking responsibility and empowerment are central here. This is reflected in the artistic interpretation, with a focus on works that challenge dialogue, reflection and action.
When we realize that paradise has been irrevocably lost, this does not necessarily result in negative feelings such as melancholy, sadness or defeatism. You could just as well say that only through this sense of a ‘paradise lost’ can we understand which questions and challenges really matter today. In paradise, material abundance, social harmony and natural purity were taken for granted: they were not considered or realized that these too could disappear. Only after paradise can there be responsibility and empowerment. Responsibility as in the realization that we must cherish those values, that they are not obvious, and that people are responsible for them. Empowerment is the realization that we must take action ourselves to create a livable world.
A perfect world is not within human reach, but people can work towards a better world. We need to think together about what we want to take from the past into the future, and what we don’t. And we realize that it is up to us to shape the future.
The concept for ‘After Paradise’ was created through a collaboration between the curators (Hilde Teerlinck and Patrick Ronse) and Stéphane Symons (KU Leuven, Institute of Philosophy).

Be-Part is een platform voor actuele beeldende kunst in Zuid-West-Vlaanderen en een internationaal laboratorium voor de creatie en presentatie van hedendaagse kunst. Gericht op actuele beeldende kunst, kent het een belangrijke plaats en aandacht toe aan de raakvlakken en interacties met andere disciplines, om zo actuele kunst voor te stellen in al zijn diversiteit en het publiek te laten kennismaken met de recente ontwikkelingen en debatten in de kunstwereld. Be-Part wil artistiek talent selecteren, ondersteunen, ontwikkelingskansen geven, presenteren en waar mogelijk internationaal lanceren. Sinds 1 juli 2018 is Be-Part een interlokale vereniging met een werking in Waregem en in Kortrijk. De voormalige paardenstallen van brouwerij Tack worden gebruikt voor toonaangevende exposities van hedendaagse kunst.

Be-Part is a platform for contemporary visual art in South-West Flanders and an international laboratory for the creation and presentation of contemporary art. Focusing on contemporary visual art, it gives an important place and attention to the interfaces and interactions with other disciplines, in order to present contemporary art in all its diversity and to introduce the public to recent developments and debates in the art world. Be-Part wants to select and support artistic talent, give development opportunities, present and where possible launch it internationally. Since July 1, 2018, Be-Part is an interlocal association with operations in Waregem and Kortrijk. The former horse stables of the Tack brewery are used for leading exhibitions of contemporary art.
