Avee presenteert Mathias MU in samenwerking met PLUS-ONE Gallery en A.P. Studio. Deze pop up in de vitrine van de voormalige Foto Maro is een aanvulling op het augmented reality werk die Mathias aan de Leieboorden presenteert voor Wonder festival. De titel “A Glimpse of Mu No Gatari” verwijst naar zijn fictieve digitale wereld, die zich voortdurend uitbreidt met de creatie van nieuwe objecten, sculpturen en omgevingen. Elk nieuw project brengt nieuwe verhaallijnen met zich mee, die geleidelijk leiden tot de ontwikkeling van een videogame/digitale wereld als een uitbreiding van zijn fysieke praktijk.
“Mu no Gatari” betekent in het Japans “Het verhaal van het niets” of “Het verhaal van de leegte”. De term “Mu” is afgeleid van een karakter dat staat voor synergie. Het overstijgt het dichotome denken en schept ruimte om oordelen uit te stellen en te zien wat er dan gebeurt. Dit gevoel van leegte of nietsheid heeft betrekking op de objecten, sculpturen en omgevingen in zijn werk die functioneren als (digitale) artefacten van dingen die nooit hebben bestaan en verhalen die nog verteld moeten worden. Als zodanig zoeken ze een soort vrijheid: een vrijheid van geschiedenis en context. Het spreekt tot de niet-fysieke essentie van deze objecten die een ruimte bewonen waar materialiteit niet langer de primaire zorg is. Het is een omgeving waar de aard van de objecten ongrijpbaar is, in afwachting van de betekenis die wij eraan geven.

Avee presents Mathias MU in collaboration with PLUS-ONE Gallery and A.P. Studio. This pop up in the showcase of the former Foto Maro complements the augmented reality work Mathias is presenting on the Leieboorden for Wonder festival. The title “A Glimpse of Mu No Gatari” refers to his fictional digital world, which is constantly expanding with the creation of new objects, sculptures and environments. Each new project brings new storylines, gradually leading to the development of a video game/digital world as an extension of his physical practice.
“Mu no Gatari” translates to “The Tale of Nothingness” or “The Story of Emptiness” from japanese. The term “Mu” is derived from a character that stands for synergy. It exceeds dichotomous thinking and creates space to postpone judgments and see what happens then. This sense of emptiness or nothingness relates to the objects, sculptures and environments in my work that function as (digital) artifacts of things that have never existed and stories yet to be told. As such, they seek a kind of freedom: a freedom from history and context. It speaks to the non-physical essence of these objects that inhabit a space where materiality is no longer the primary concern. It is an environment, where the nature of the objects is elusive, awaiting the meaning we give to it.

Avee Gallery is een hedendaagse kunstgalerij, gesticht in 2019 in de O‑L-Vrouwestraat in Kortrijk. Na vijf jaar wordt Avee nomadisch met regelmatige projecten in Kortrijk naast tentoonstellingen en evenementen in andere steden in binnen- en buitenland. Naast gevestigde kunstenaars brengt Avee opkomende talenten. Avee Gallery heeft geen vaste openingsuren maar is gebonden aan tentoonstellingen doorheen het jaar. Avee Gallery is a contemporary art gallery, founded in 2019 in Kortrijk. After five years, Avee becomes nomadic with regular projects in Kortrijk in addition to exhibitions and events in other cities at home and abroad. Avee Gallery wants to allocate space not only to established artists, but also to young talents at the start of their careers.
