About the exhibition

The slash is a mark that can­not make up its mind. It clea­ves through skin and bone to divi­de bina­ries, whi­le brid­ging unex­pec­ted gaps in one sin­gle gestu­re. It severs and sutu­res in the same bre­ath, hol­ding see­ming oppo­si­tes in ​“an une­a­sy, impos­si­ble simul­ta­nei­ty” (Lau­ren Elkin). In SLASH/STROKE, Natas­ja Mabe­soo­ne, Mer­ce­des Azpi­li­cue­ta and Anna-Maria Pina­ka inha­bit this rest­less spa­ce: whe­re the cli­chés of girl­hood slash patri­ar­chal expecta­ti­ons, the mon­sters we think we know show their sharp ton­gues, and stern lea­ther soft­ly flows into a stro­ke of inti­ma­te cri­ti­que. The three artists navi­ga­te ambigui­ty as a form of pro­tec­ti­on in their expli­cit nar­ra­ti­ves of resis­tan­ce. What if occu­pying the grey zone isn’t a com­pro­mi­se, but a femi­nist strategy?
