About the exhibition

ELDERS Collective and Be-Part present two separate exhibitions in a shared location during Kortrijk Art Weekend: the Paardenstallen in Kortrijk.

ELDERS features the recent film by Hamza Halloubi (°1982), ITS THROAT IS PARCHED WITH THIRST, BUT IT WOULD NOT ACCEPTSINGLE DROP OF WATER FROM ALIEN HANDS. The work departs from the disappearance of Mehdi Ben Barka (1920 – 1965), a prominent Moroccan politician who played an important role in the opposition in the 1960’s. He openly denounced the monarchy, advocated for a democratic and anti-colonial Moroccan state and was a major voice speaking on behalf of the Global South. Ben Barka disappeared in Paris in 1965 – a mystery that has never been solved and is still speculated on today. Ronen Bergman, an Israeli investigative journalist (and recent Pulitzer winner), asserted during a 2020 radio interview that Ben Barka was murdered and, with the help of the Israeli secret service, buried at the site where the Fondation Louis Vuitton has stood since 2014. The Fondation is a private museum for modern and contemporary art founded by multibillionaire Bernard Arnault. Hamza Halloubi took the alleged location of Ben Barka’s body as the starting point for a poignant 3D film. In the film, Halloubi shows the spirit of the opposition leader wandering through the empty Fondation Louis Vuitton building – a symbol of the tangled relationship between art and late-stage capitalism – while questioning the situation aloud. As a result, Ben Barka’s story becomes a philosophical reflection that confronts us with questions about the society in which we live, where economic interests seem to take priority over people and ideals.

The video in this exhibition was made possible with the support of De Pont in Tilburg, Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre in Brussels, M HKA in Antwerp, and the Flemish Community.

Be-Part presents Jan Kempenaers (°1968) with work from his new publication Memorials, featuring brutalist war memorials in former Yugoslavia.

About the location

ELDERS is a nomadic collective presenting contemporary artistic practices that move between visual art, architecture and design. For each project, the collective travels to a new, carefully selected location in Kortrijk or the surrounding region. From these unique sites, a dialogue emerges between emerging talent and established artists.

ELDERS was founded in 2021. The current members are Petrus Paklons, Hélène Depondt, Koen Titeca, Joachim Coucke, Dieter Van Caneghem, Joke Anckaert, Thierry Van Loocke, Bruno Teirlynck, Charbel Abou Zeidan, and Luc Keppens.
